Causes & Risk Factors

Fecal incontinence may result from muscle or nerve damage, chronic constipation, diarrhea, pelvic floor dysfunction, childbirth-related injuries, or neurologic conditions. Aging and prior pelvic surgery may also contribute.

Gastroenterological Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis may include physical examination, imaging studies, and specialized testing, such as the Medtronic InterStim test, to evaluate anal and pelvic floor function. Treatment options may include dietary modifications, medications, pelvic floor therapy, biofeedback, bowel training, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery depending on the severity of symptoms.
