What are Hemorrhoids / Hemorrhoid Banding?
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus that may cause discomfort, itching, irritation, or bleeding. They are very common and can range from mild irritation to persistent symptoms that interfere with daily activities.
Symptoms
- Rectal bleeding
- Anal itching or irritation
- Swelling around the anus
- Pain or discomfort during bowel movements
- Sensation of incomplete cleaning
- Tender lumps near the anus
Causes & Risk Factors
Hemorrhoids may develop due to chronic constipation, straining during bowel movements, prolonged sitting, pregnancy, obesity, or heavy lifting.
Gastroenterological Diagnosis & Treatment
Treatment may include increased dietary fiber, hydration, stool softeners, topical therapies, and lifestyle changes. For persistent internal hemorrhoids, a doctor uses a thin, bendable tube with a light and camera called a flexible sigmoidoscope to see inside your rectum. The scope guides a small tool to place a tight rubber band around the base of an internal hemorrhoid, cutting off its blood flow so it shrinks and falls off.
