Endoscopic Ultrasound

What is an Endoscopic Ultrasound?

An endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a minimally invasive procedure that combines endoscopy and ultrasound technology to provide highly detailed images of the digestive tract and the surrounding organs. During the procedure, your doctor uses a thin, flexible endoscope equipped with a small ultrasound probe at its tip, allowing them to see beyond the lining of the digestive tract and examine deeper tissue layers as well as nearby structures, including the pancreas, gallbladder, liver, and surrounding lymph nodes. Endoscopic ultrasound is commonly used to evaluate abnormalities, determine the extent of certain conditions, perform fine-needle biopsies, drain cysts, place stents, and perform pain blocks when appropriate.

Preparing for an Endoscopic Ultrasound

Your doctor will provide you with detailed instructions on how to prepare for your endoscopic ultrasound. In most cases, you will be asked not to eat or drink for several hours before the procedure so your stomach is empty. It is important to discuss any medical conditions you have with your doctor, as well as any prescription or over-the-counter medications you take, especially blood thinners and diabetes medications. Following your preparation instructions carefully helps ensure the most accurate examination and a safe procedure.

What to expect during your Endoscopic Ultrasound

An endoscopic ultrasound is typically performed using sedation to help keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Your doctor will gently guide the endoscope through your mouth and into your digestive tract, where the ultrasound probe will capture high-resolution images of the digestive tract and nearby organs that may not be visible with other imaging tests, such as a CT scan or MRI. Depending on the reason for the examination, your doctor may also perform additional procedures, such as a fine-needle biopsy. After the procedure, you will spend a short time in a recovery area while the sedation wears off. Because sedation is used, you will need someone to drive you home after your appointment.
