What are Hernias?
Hernias occur when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weakened area in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. They commonly develop in the abdomen or groin and may appear as a visible bulge.
Symptoms
- Visible bulge or swelling
- Abdominal or groin discomfort
- Pressure or heaviness
- Pain with lifting, coughing, or straining
- Burning or aching sensation
Causes & Risk Factors
Risk factors for hernias may include heavy lifting, chronic coughing, obesity, pregnancy, prior surgery, aging, or conditions that increase pressure within the abdomen.
Gastroenterological Diagnosis & Treatment
Diagnosis is often made through physical examination and imaging when needed. Some small hernias may be monitored, but many require surgical repair to relieve symptoms and prevent complications such as incarceration or strangulation.
